J. Isaac Copeland (1910-1995), a native of Clinton, S.C., was graduated from Presbyterian College in 1931. Copeland then entered George Peabody College for Teachers in 1932, where he earned a B.S. in Library Science and an M.A. in history. In 1936, Copeland became the library director at Furman University. He returned to George Peabody College in 1942 and remained there for more than six years.
